Red Riding Hood

Well, I have to admit that I really have little desire to see the new adaptation of The Little Red Riding Hood on the big screen.. However,  I am intrigued by how beautiful it looks....

The original fairy tale can be traced back in french folklore and was originally intended as a cautionary tale geared towards young women to persuade them to avoid talking to strangers..The Red Hood part was added later in 1697 in Charles Perraut's version of the story - "Le Petit Chaperon Rouge."  It was later adapted, yet again, with it's original goriness toned down by The Brother's Grimm in the 1800s..In their version the Grandmother and Red are spared - where in the first version..they meet a grizzly end....Ever since I saw the ads for the new movie (which now seems to have come and gone..) I have been RE- noticing the general Red Riding Hood theme in everything..from my children's shows on pbs..to high end fashion ads.   Hmmmm...interesting!..

via Lars Bolander's book "Scandinavian Design" (a lovely man and such a talented designer who, by the way,  I had the pleasure of meeting just the other night at Nathan Turner's amazing West Hollywood store..

In an even more contemporary version, I would like to think the Grandmother's house looks something like this!

1973

This 'Red Riding Hood' theme reminds me of Nicolas Roeg's 1973 "Don't Look Now"..Where Donald Sutherland is chasing a little old scary lady in a red cloak all over Venice...Ironically, pretty Julie Christie plays his wife and also plays the Grandmother in the new "Red" movie..

Still pretty..
